Abstrak:The aim of the present study is to investigate the difficulties experienced by the fifth semester students of English Education Program at Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in translating Indonesian text into English. This is a descriptive qualitative research because the researcher would like to give the verbal description of the difficulties phenomenon faced by the fifth semester students in Indonesian ? English translation class. Through this research it is found that in doing the translation from bahasa Indonesia into English, the students still face the difficulties especially in deciding the lexical choices and in using their grammar competence. These difficulties are because the students still possess the strong influence of their first language, their mother tongue ? bahasa Indonesia. Their English linguistic awareness is lacking, they do not realize that English is so distinct to bahasa Indonesia. In addition, seeing the result of the students? translation, the students still experience the failure in all the three processes of translation given by Larson. The students cannot study well the lexicon, grammatical structure, the context of the source language text, so they cannot analyze and determine the meaning of the source text. Further, they do not do well the process of reconstructing the same meaning by using the lexicon and grammatical structure which are appropriate in the receptor language and its cultural context. In short, their translation becomes unnatural and unacceptable. Last of all, although they have passed several basic English courses which logically can train them to be better students in using English, their English is clearly still bad. Since they make so many trivial errors and mistakes in doing their English translation in their fifth semester, their English capability is still questionable.
