abstrak: This study was aimed at finding out the students? improvement on speaking skill after being taught by impromptu speech, describing the students? improvement on aspects of speaking by using impromptu speech, and knowing students? responses to the teaching-learning process using impromptu speech. This is a kind of action research. The design of this research is a spiral model coined by Kemmis and McTaggart (Koshy, 2005:4). The researcher planned, acted, observed, and reflected on the students? speaking process using impromptu speech as a method of teaching. This research was conducted from March to June 2013 in a speaking 1 course and involved 30 students in the English Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. There were three cycles of intervention which lasted a total of sixteen weeks. The instruments were pre test, impromptu speech notes, observation notes, reflection notes, reflection forms, questionnaire, and post test. The data were students? speaking performances, students? drafts, researcher?s notes, students? reflections, and completed questionnaires. Technique of analyzing data used qualitative and quantitative analyses to find means of pre test and post test. The research finding showed that there was an improvement on the students? speaking skill which indicated the positive direct impact of impromptu speech. The mean of students? achievement in the pre test was 66.5, and the mean of students? achievement in the post test was 72.1; therefore, the improvement was 5.6 points (8.4%). All aspects of speaking could improve where the significant improvement was in the aspects of fluency (2.2 points) and vocabulary (1.8 points). The other aspects (content, grammar, and pronunciation) did not improve significantly (0.3-0.8 points). Most students (90%) showed positive responses to the impromptu speech process and believed that impromptu speech motivated them to practice their English. Impromptu speech is a good method to teach speaking skill. Key words: Speaking, Speaking Skill, Impromptu Speech
