abstrak:For many English teachers, teaching grammar means drilling students to comprehend the forms and the rules. The students have to recognize and remember a lot of complex grammar patterns. This results in bored students to produce correct forms on exercises. Most students tend to commit errors when they try to use the language in context. The teachers had better present grammar in certain situation for real purpose. This paper discusses the ways of teaching grammar which is designed systematically for communicative use. In communicative approach, the ultimate goal of teaching-learning process is communicative competence. However, it is a serious misconception that teaching English communicatively may neglect grammatical competence. English teachers are supposed to internalize grammar for communicative competence. Both teachers and students can use several strategies for the grammar lesson, namely relating knowledge needs and learning goals, applying higher order thinking skill, providing appropriate language input, using predicting skill, and limiting expectation for drills. The procedures for grammar teaching consist of pre-communicative language practice, communicative language practice, structured communication, and authentic communication. In pre-commuication language practice, the teacher introduces grammar in context. The communicative language practice manages students to apply grammar points on specified situation. Meanwhile, the structured communication offers students to select the language use for expressing the meaning. The authentic communication provides an opportunity to use grammar to real life situations. By employing this approach, the students will be able to master both grammar and communication skill.
