English Department of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. 2013. Consultant: Titi Rokhayati, M. Pd. This research is aimed to find out whether the use of reciprocal teaching method effective or not to improve students? reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP N 9 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. The types of the research is quantitative with an experimental design. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 9 Purworejo which consists of 192 students. The amount of sample is 64 students. Sample is taken using purposive sampling technique. Independent variable of this study is the use of reciprocal teaching method. Dependent variable of this study is the students? scores in reading comprehension test. The instrument which is used to get data is multiple choice test. The techniques of analyzing the data are descriptive statistics in finding mean, standard deviation, mode, median, and inferential analysis is used to prove the hypothesis test. The critical value used in this test is ? = 0.05. The result of the analysis shows that before giving treatment, the mean score of pre-test of the control group is 62.46 and the experimental group is 63.59. After giving the treatment, the mean score of post-test of control group is 68.03 and the experimental group is 73.43. Besides, to know whether Ha is accepted or rejected the researcher consulted to the t test. The result of t-value is 9.81, then the researcher consults to the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) level of significance and the degree of freedom is 64. It shows that t-value is higher than ttable (9.81>1.99). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the use of reciprocal teaching method is effective to teach reading skill in the eighth grade students of SMP N 9 Purworejo.
