ABSTRACT Toyibah. 2012. The Ability in Identifying Independent and dependent Clause in Sentence of the First Year Students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the Academic Year 2011/2012. Keywords: ability, independent clause, dependent clause, sentence. We should use grammatical sentence to write in communication. The researcher focuses the study on the ability in identifying independent and dependent clause in sentence. There are two main problems taken by the researcher in this thesis. Those are 1) How far is the ability in identifying independent and dependent clause of the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the academic year 2011/2012. 2) What kinds of errors made by the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the academic year 2011/2012. The purpose of the study are 1) To know how far the ability in identifying independent and dependent clause of the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the academic year 2011/2012. 2) To discuss what kinds of errors made by the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the academic year 2011/2012. This thesis uses descriptive research in which the researcher wants to analyze and describe the result of the ability in identifying independent and dependent clause in sentence among the students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong in the academic year 2011/2012. The population of this thesis is the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Klirong that consists of 216 students, and the researcher takes 54 students as the subject of this research. The instrument of this research is a test that consists of 25 items of multiple choice tests.. The data analysis technique is finding the percentage of the mastery level of identifying independent and dependent clause. From the research result, it can be obtained that the average score in identifying independent and dependent clause in sentences is 68.52. It belongs to a good category. The standard deviation is 11.10. There are eight students belong to upper group, thirty nine students belong to intermediate group, and seven students belong to lower group. From the analysis of error, there are 4 types of error: addition is 1 item (4 %), omission are 5 items (20 %), misordering are 7 items (28 %), misformation are 12 items (48 %). Most errors happen on misformation.
