The Effectiveness of Teaching Writing Descriptive Text Using English Tourism Brochure at The Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 1 Kepil Wonosobo In The Academic Year 2012/2013. Thesis. English Department. Sarjana (S1) Degree Program, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. Advisor: Titi Rokhayati, M.Pd. Key Words: writing, descriptive text, tourism brochure The objective of the study is to describe the effectiveness of Tourism brochure to teach writing descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Kepil, Wonosobo, and to know the result of teaching writing using Tourism brochure to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Kepil, Wonosobo. It is expected that the result of the study will provide a deeper understanding about using Tourism brochure as a teaching media for English teachers and also for the readers. In order to achieve the objective of this study, the researcher will design a quasi experiment using pre-test and post-test. The population of this study is the eighth grade student of SMP N 1 Kepil, Wonosobo in the Academic Year 2010/2011. The sample of this study is class D Class as experimental group that consist of 31, and E class as control group that consists of 30 students. Before the experiment was conducted, the students were given a pre-test for both groups. At the end of the experiment, each group was given a post-test. To analyze both post tests, the researcher used t test. The result of the study showed that the students? progress of experimental group in mastering writing descriptive text was really good. In computation t test, alpha level used is 0.05. T table score was 16.71. Based on the score obtained, t value is greater than t table (3.89>1.671). Therefore, the researcher can conclude that the use of Tourism brochure method is effective to improve students? writing ability. Based on the result of the study, the researcher suggested that the use of Tourism brochure can be an alternative way to teach the language learner, especially to improve the students? writing ability. This result hopefully would motivate language teacher to use Tourism brochure method in teaching English in the classroom, especially when teaching English writing to the level of Junior High School students.
