Reading is central to the learning process by reading activity, people may again important information that are not presented by teacher in the classroom. Therefore, English becomes compulsory subject for junior high school students. Many students are poor in reading English. If the teacher could take an appropriate method in teaching reading, it would help the students to read in effective way one of teaching method that can be used of reading is SQ3R. The objective of this research is to find out whether SQ3R as a method is effective or not to improve students? reading comprehension. The researcher took 64 students as the sample; there were experimental group and control group. For the experimental, the researcher used class VIII B, which consists of 32 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 32 students of class VIII F. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught reading descriptive text by using SQ3R method to the experimental group and using conventional method to the control group. The researcher then statistically the data by using t-test polled variance. After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching descriptive using SQ3R method is effective to improve student?s reading comprehension. As a fact, the result of t-value is 4.162. Based on the shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 4.162 >2000. Another fact shows that the method used is effective is shown by the mean of experimental group, the mean is 75.47. On the contrary, the mean of control group is 65.94. xiv Based on the result finding, it can be seen that the students? reading comprehension increase. They can understand the passages easier and encourage their motivation. Moreover, the students learning English since the method used is not boring. By using this method the students becomes more creative since they get more practice.
